First post in my Cacti & Succulents Garden

I am excited to start this blog. Growing Cactus and succulent has been my wife Ann's hobby and mine for a while. We have collected quite a lot along the years, especially after we moved into our new home two and half years ago. Naturally we get the idea of backyard nursery. In this blog, I will introduce you our collections, share decoration/design ideas, care tips, and many more.

To most people, cacti and succulents are their great aunt's jade plant (which survived all these years despite her).[1] Yes, they are quite easy to grow. They can survive in harsh conditions, since some of them grow in desert or high elevation mountains in nature. Most importantly, they are beautiful! Many of them have the astonishing appearances, which will amaze your guests. Colorful rosettes are the 'flowers' which bloom forever. It becomes more and more trendy for landscaping and interior decoration. For instance, Rosettes are used in wedding ceremonies as center piece.

Lastly, a warning: once bitten by the cactus (and succulents) collection bug, there is no known cure! [1]

DIY Plant Shelves from Pallets

Since we have so many succulents, small pots were everywhere in our backyard. I decided to organize them, not only for better look, but also for easier care/watering. There are many benefits to build the plant shelves by yourself. First of all, of course you can save tens. even hundreds of dollars. Secondly, you can build the size you want to fit your space. Thirdly, you can improve your DIY skills. Lastly, you lower the carbon footprint if you follow my plan by reclaiming pallet wood. Step 1 Let's start from dismantling pallet. Aloe & Agave

Both Aloe and Agave are succulents. They both have a rosette of fleshly leaves with spines. All agaves and some aloes are stemless (or nearly stemless). Both have varieties having small rosette and large rosette. Have a look of the picture below, can you tell which is which? Well, the left one is aloe bloomii, and the right one is agave americana. Although they look similar,  the aloe and agave are only distantly related, with their last common ancestor thought to exist around 93 million years ago, when dinosaurs still walked the Earth. Aloes are native to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula; agaves are native to America continental --- across the Atlantic Ocean. Some aloes can grow into a tree up to 30' tall. Agaves will stay on the ground, with rosette size varying from 6" to 15'. Another important difference is their flowers. Agaves only bloom before they die. Tips for Cacti & Succulents Care

It is often assumed that cacti and succulents need little care because they come from deserts. It is true in some sense, since they can tolerate a great deal of neglect. However, they are likely retreat into dormancy and look unattractive. Therefore, it is important to treat them fairly as other plants. The key factors are: soil, light, water, temperature, and nutrients. Soil --- growing medium Well-drained soil is important. They may rot from the roots up in poorly-drained soil. I use nursery mix, which is an all purpose soil mix for outdoor use. It is quite sandy, containing Top Soil, Garden Compost and Fine Redwood Amendment. Avoid heavy clay soil which drains poorly. Most cacti and succulents like a slightly acid soil (pH 5.5 ~ 6.5). Light Most cacti and succulents are best cultivated outdoors  with full sun (at least partial sun) in warm climate. However, if they are in small pots, full sun in summer might be too much for them ---- move them to a partial sun spot....
